In a move that rocked several worlds this morning, Google announced that they are buying Motorola's handset division, Motorola Mobility. The 12.5 Billion dollar transaction will give everything cell phone to Google.
It's an interesting move. Google has said they don't want to actually make handsets, they want to partner with other companies. That's why the Android operating system is the most popular in the world. However, Google may not want Motorola for anything other than their huge inventory of patents. It seems lots of companies are routinely filing lawsuits against Google. This is an attempt to get a small piece of revenue for someone every time an Android handset is sold.
Google may be buying just to get the patents in their possession.
Motorola, who invented the cell phone, has struggled for the last few years and their latest tabloid, the Xoom has not sold like expected.
There may be more to this than meets the eye currently, but trust me when I say that Google has a plan...
