Near Infrared Spectroscopy or NIRS is a way to measure blood flow externally. Stats show that around one third of patients who suffer a stroke will have another while still undergoing treatment in the hospital.
To help with this, the Mayo Clinic in Florida is working on the NIRS device. The light penetrates to about 2.5 centimeters (which is about one inch) into the brain tissue.
So far the device has been tested on a small sample size of patients but has performed well. Because of its small size, it may not be ideal for all cases, but it could prove valuable in certain situations and is much less invasive and intensive than other current therapies.
