For the past several years now... and especially for the last year or so, we've been hearing more... and more... even some more... about the "end of the world" scenario as foretold by the Mayan calendar.
I've always found these types of prophecies at the minimum interesting and at the extreme, almost depressing. No matter how many times people "miss" the end of times date, there seems to be no end to the number of people that are willing to venture another guess with concrete certainty. Oh, and there seems to be a never ending supply of people to believe in the next projected date.
The unfortunate side is that those who truly go "all in" on these scenarios often liquidate all of their worldly possessions right before, since they won't need them once the date comes. Then when the date passes without a change, those poor folks are left with nothing. It's not something to be mocked, it's something that should generate sympathy.
Anyway, the focus in recent history has been on the Mayan calendar which ends on December 21, 2012. The Mayans were some bright people. They developed sophisticated mathematical formulas and were amazingly advanced in their study of astronomy. So, when the Mayan calendar ends, many have taken that as a sign they felt the world would end as well.
To help people understand what all of this actually means, the high IQ gang at NASA have put together a video to explain their take on the whole "2012 Apocalypse". Pretty cool stuff if you ask me. Of course you haven't asked me. But then, it's my blog and I can do what I want! :-)
